Zipping Through the Cloud Forest
From sunrise until well after sunset, our students were on the move exploring as much of Monteverde as possible. While the three buses had slightly different orders of events, we all managed to squeeze in the following activities:
- Zip lining - Donning helmets and harnesses, our brave students flew through the trees hundreds of feet in the air. If my watch is to be believed, we reached speeds of 40 miles per hour and enjoyed one ride almost a mile long. It was all smiles as we backed up the bus for our next activity.
- Cloud forest hike - Our students really took on the role of observers and learners as they hiked through a pristine parcel of cloud forest. What a treat to be in this special place, learning about the incredible biodiversity supported by this unique topography and climate. Because of their keen eyes and impressive ability to sneak along the trail, we found all kinds of fun insects, birds, and eggs.
- Farm tour - We visited an active farm, where students learned about Costa Rican agriculture and had a chance to interact with the animals. I was again impressed with our students’ curiosity, as they chased chickens, milked a cow, and tried cocoa nibs.
- Exploring Santa Elena - Bus two closed out the day with time exploring (and shopping) Santa Elena. This is a small, safe spot where students can explore in groups, practicing their Spanish as they find souvenirs and treats.
Tomorrow, we will take the slow road to the beach, stopping for a boat ride in crocodile-infested waters and riding a gondola up in to the canopies of a coastal rain forest.
