Water Day!

Today’s itinerary is always a highlight of the trip, because it’s water day! With such warm weather and persistent questions about pool hours, the chaperones were relieved to finally say, “Yes, you get to swim today.”

This morning, our students applied sunscreen, grabbed their buddy, and hopped in a kayak at Lake Arenal. With perfect skies, gentle wind, and a clear view of the volcano, we paddled across the lake to a protected cove where our students splashed, swam, and tipped over their friends’ kayaks. This is a perfect way to take advantage of Costa Rica’s many gifts!

After a delicious lunch at a farm-to-table restaurant owned by a former teacher, our students had a chance to quickly explore the town of La Fortuna before heading to the hot springs. The hot springs are the “fanciest” activity of the trip, with beautifully manicured landscaping and 14 naturally heated pools ranging from warm to too hot. It was in the hotter pools that some of our students realized their sunscreen application may not have been as thorough as they told their chaperones.

Tomorrow, we head to the town of Santa Elena in the region of Monteverde. Know for its cloud forests, we are in for a treat!

The Final Full Day

Today, our students slowly started their way home, as we travelled from the beach back to San Jose. Along the way was stopped in the town of Esparza to enjoy a cultural exchange and performance with students from the local elementary school. Esparza’s picturesque main square is the perfect place to enjoy music and dancing, and many of our students were eager to join the fun.  After lunch, our students had the opportunity to spend the rest of their Colones at our final souvenir shop. For our last dinner in Costa Rica, we headed for the hills overlooking town. There, we enjoyed traditional Costa Rica folk music and dance. After a while, the DJ switched to more contemporary American tunes and the professional dancers were quickly replaced by a crowd of jumping Deal 8th graders. It was a lovely way to end our time in this special place.  We look forward to a long day of travel tomorrow and seeing our loved ones very soon. Thank you for joining our adventure!

To The Beach!

Our trip hit a crescendo today, as we finally made it to the beach! Manuel Antonio National Park is known equally for its abundant wildlife and beautiful beaches, so the promise of monkeys and swimming meant there were no complaints about our early wake up time. That said, we know what wins the battle in the adolescent mind, so our students hardly slowed down for sloths as they sprinted to the crashing waves.  With frequent mandatory sunscreen breaks, we had a blast swimming, playing in the sand, and chasing hermit crabs. Before we knew it (and hopefully before sunburns set in), it was time to hike to lunch in town. The snores on the bus ride home told us it was time to slow down, so our students had a chance to buy snacks and play in the pool for the rest of the afternoon. It was a great day! Tomorrow, we will make our way back to San Jose, enjoying a cultural exchange, souvenir shop, and dinner overlooking the central valley.

Safely in La Fortuna

After the coffee plantation, our buses wound their way through the mountains to La Fortuna, a popular tourist spot in the shadow of Volcán Arenal. After carefully navigating one of our buses out of a precariously tight turn (the children were safely off the bus), we took a hike at the base of the volcano. On our short hike, we learned about carpenter ants, edible leaves, cicada brood cycles, and the mostly flightless curassow. With full bellies and excited about tomorrow, our travelers are now moving to their rooms for a 9:30 pm bed time. Tomorrow is our “water day”, with a morning of kayaking and an afternoon soaking in the hot springs. Our students have been kind, clean, and quick learners during our very full first day. They are having a blast, and I hope they remember to send you some fun pictures and an occasional “thank you”!
