The Final Full Day

Today, our students slowly started their way home, as we travelled from the beach back to San Jose. Along the way was stopped in the town of Esparza to enjoy a cultural exchange and performance with students from the local elementary school. Esparza’s picturesque main square is the perfect place to enjoy music and dancing, and many of our students were eager to join the fun. 

After lunch, our students had the opportunity to spend the rest of their Colones at our final souvenir shop. For our last dinner in Costa Rica, we headed for the hills overlooking town. There, we enjoyed traditional Costa Rica folk music and dance. After a while, the DJ switched to more contemporary American tunes and the professional dancers were quickly replaced by a crowd of jumping Deal 8th graders. It was a lovely way to end our time in this special place.

Safely in La Fortuna

After the coffee plantation, our buses wound their way through the mountains to La Fortuna, a popular tourist spot in the shadow of Volcán Arenal. After carefully navigating one of our buses out of a precariously tight turn (the children were safely off the bus), we took a hike at the base of the volcano. On our short hike, we learned about carpenter ants, edible leaves, cicada brood cycles, and the mostly flightless curassow. With full bellies and excited about tomorrow, our travelers are now moving to their rooms for a 9:30 pm bed time. Tomorrow is our “water day”, with a morning of kayaking and an afternoon soaking in the hot springs. Our students have been kind, clean, and quick learners during our very full first day. They are having a blast, and I hope they remember to send you some fun pictures and an occasional “thank you”!

Caffeine, Anyone?

 On the road to La Fortuna, we stopped for a tour of three Brit Coffee Plantation just outside San Jose. This well curated tour takes our students through the process of coffee making from seed to sip. While many of our pallets aren’t quite refined enough to pick up the subtle hints of volcanic ash in the single blends, that didn’t keep our students from enjoying thee many samples and sharing their opinions, which ranged from “ew” to “give me more!”

Off We Go!

 Thanks to some early alarms and obliging parents, our students all made it to the airport on time and we are officially on the road to Costa Rica! The flights so far have been smooth and everything has gone according to plan, so we expect to arrive to our hotel on time. Our first flight will arrive early enough to get a little pool time before dinner, while our very jealous second flight will have just enough time to eat dinner, learn about the plans for tomorrow, then head to bed.  Tomorrow we will set early alarms for our big breakfast in San Jose before the real adventure starts. At this breakfast, we’ll meet our tour directors (the real celebrities of the trip) and learn more about what to expect from the trip.  The chaperones can feel the excitement from our students, as they share what they are looking forward to and ask countless nervous questions. How is the food? Are the monkeys aggressive? How much Spanish will we speak? We’ll find out soon!
